The city of Modi’in was established in 1993 and merged in 2003 with neighboring Maccabim-Reut to become Modi’in-Maccabim-Reut. It is a modern city whose layout was planned by the architect Moshe Safdie to include recreational spaces covering 50% of the city’s area and a central shopping mall and cinema complex. Modi’in has a current population of 85,000 but the city is planned for expansion to eventually house 240,000 residents. Modi‘in is centrally located 35km from Tel Aviv and 30km from Jerusalem with excellent road and rail links.
